Not too long ago, a friend and I visited a brand breathtaking winery in Oregon’s incredible wine country. As soon as we arrived in the tasting room, a nice man at the counter poured us some wine and explained to us a little bit to us about how the winery came to into being.
I wish I remember all the details of what he told us, but the truth is that the first words out of his mouth distracted me.
“Ten years ago…” he began. And I couldn’t help but think to myself: Ten years? As in…years? Ten of them?
That is a really really long time!
It made me think about the patience and gumption and diligence and commitment and persistence that it takes to propel us in a single direction—despite resistance, cost, investment, or setbacks. It made me think about how good things, like the really satisfying, mouth-watering, soul-warming Pinot Noir I was enjoying, take time.
It made me think about how sometimes we have to wait a really, really long time to see the “fruit” of our labor.
I don’t know what your dream is but maybe you’ve been waiting a long time for it to come true.
Maybe it feels like forever. Maybe you’re waiting for a relationship to begin or a career to begin or a relationship to change or a career to change. Maybe you’ve been waiting to adopt a child or to finish a degree. Maybe someone you love is sick, and you’ve been praying for him/her to get better.
I don’t know.
What I do know is that most things that matter take time. Most things that are good don’t happen overnight. And most of the time the things that are worth waiting for really will require you to wait, to persist.
Don’t give up. Don’t walk away. If you don’t tend to your vines who will?

From the title of this blog, I knew it’s hit home for me. Thanks for reiterating this point Ally. It seems like I’ve been waiting a while for some dreams to come true, but in the waiting, I’ve seen some signs point to yes which have propelled me forward and given me some hope in the waiting.
Seriously. You are so stinking inspirational. You have got to stop making me tear up at work…
I agree with Mandee. You have a remarkable ability to see, understand, and articulate critical life issues. You perceive, process, and produce ideas and wrap them up in an package of inspiration. You clearly have a gift!
I loved our convo today over lunch. Can’t wait to read that entry… I found myself thinking about it most of the afternoon and into the night. I even shared it with a few people… giving you full credit, of course! 🙂
Really enjoyed reading this… Thanks for the beautiful perspective.

It’s so nice to hear someone reflect what is going on in my heart! Patience, persistence…tending to the vine. Thanks, Al. Love ya!
There’s nothing like a good shot of conviction for the day. Thanks for this encouragement, Allison. Needed the reminders.
Being patient and persistent drives me crazy, yet I know that’s where real growth and transformation happens. Thanks for the reminder 🙂
Love this post. So relevant for me right now. Two weeks into my marriage and two weeks into a 50 state road trip (sound familiar?) and I am reminded how much time it takes to cultivate. My husband and I are both managing traveling, writing, and filming a documentary. So far, we of course have seen the beauty of southwest America, but no fruits to our labor. It will be months until my book is written, until our documentary is filmed and edited and sent off wherever documentaries go, and until we have “permanent” address. Living in a motorhome, I don’t know if that will ever happen! But these things will take time and patience and diligence to keep moving forward. Thanks for the reminder.
GREAT point. Frustratingly simple, yet so true. I’m choosing Patience over Microwaved Results today. Good stuff!
* I believe what you do today.
* Good news is better when I’am listening to understand !
I think this is so important to keep in mind — especially in today’s society of entitlement and instant gratification (I’m including myself). I think we see people being “successful” right away — right after they graduate from college, or from grad school, or whatever. We see “overnight success” and think that brilliance and our vocation can come that quickly (and maybe for some people, it does). But still, there are other paths that require the longer road, the detours, the complications — all to add up to what people are meant to do. But it requires patience, especially if we’re meant to do something that not many people can do. And that patience can be tough to have, especially when others may not understand or get your journey or when it feels like sometimes you’re standing still!
Thank you so much for this post! Recently, I have been seeing more and more reminders of this very thing. My life is in the middle of professional and personal changes/setbacks etc. But I know, down in my spirit, what will come to pass but its having the patience to wait…maybe even longer than I thought. Thanks so much!
They really do. The best things, even. 🙂

I got my ex husband back to me and also got fertile and gave birth to twin girls after 12 years of marriage.
When I came online last year, I saw a testimony about Doctor ODUNGA and how he has been helping people with marriage issues and I decided to contact him. We spoke on email at email@example.com and later he gave me his WhatsApp number which is +2348167159012. He assured me he would help me get my ex husband back after 3 years of no contact. Doctor Odunga is the best spell caster I must say. My husband called me after 24 hours of contact. The third day, I received natural herbs for fertility and after using it, I became fertile and conceived. I and my husband reconnected, had sex and I was pregnant. Presently I am happy to say I am the mother of twin girls and this is ALL THANKS TO DOCTOR ODUNGA. I came online to say this If you need help, I believe you are saved with this man.
